The International Olympic Truce Centre participated at the “Body2Mind” Conference that was organised by 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum at the Museum of Islamic Art auditorium in Doha, on February 20-21, 2014.
The two-day conference presented the philosophy, history and implementation of Olympic education programmes, and created a platform for participants to network and share experiences.

FPP 690 460IOTF / IOTF Vice Chairperson Mrs Fanny Palli Petralia discussed how we can create a Culture of Peace through Olympic Education. “The Culture of Peace is not restricted just to interstate relations (…) It is applied in all aspects of human behavior, both individual and team. It has to do with the way we behave in our everyday life, in all aspects of our professional, social, political life.” We need to focus not only on Olympic history, this will make us monotonous. We have to focus on the values and how we can apply them in our everyday life.”

CF 690 460The Director of the IOTC, Dr. Constantinos Filis, participated at a panel with UN Special Adviser on Sports for Peace and Development Mr Wilfred Lemke and H.E. Rabia Al Kaabi, President of Qatar School Sports Federation, where the contribution of Sports & Olympism in Peace practices was discussed. Among others, Dr. Filis said that “it is an obligation, for all of us who identify with the Olympic movement, to work to our best ability in order to create another culture, a culture of peace. We can achieve this by correctly and effectively using the best tool and means of inspiration we possess: sports.(…)  We need to exploit this power to instill into people’s mind, especially the youngsters, the ideals that will help them live in a better world. Excellence does not apply to competition. It also applies to social performance, how you act within your community and try to be a useful member of the society.”

DP 690 460Ms. Dora Pallis, IOTC Deputy Director, presented the philosophy of the “IMAGINE PEACE” and the “RESPECTING DIVERSITY” educational programs, as well as some very important statistics. It is notable that more than 7.000 students, in Greece alone, have already participated in the IOTC’s Olympic Education programs so far. The two programs have attracted the interest of the international community and many governments and NOCs / NOAs have already expressed their interest to include them in their own educational system. The participants had also the chance to attend a session of the “RESPECTING DIVERSITY” program, presented by Mr. Cliff Parry, Program Director in the British Council, Athens.

The conference was hosted under the patronage of HE Sheikha Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, chairperson of the board of trustees of Qatar Museums Authority.
