“Empowering Your Sport Club, Children and Youth for the Environment in the Mediterranean Region (SportEYE)”

“Empowering Your Sport Club, Children and Youth for the Environment in the Mediterranean Region (SportEYE)” is a transnational and multi-sectoral cooperation initiative co-funded by the European Union within the Erasmus+ programme, involving partners from the Olympic Movement, Sport for Development, Academia and civil society, working together to activate and mobilize the local communities in order to improve the good governance and impact the capacity of team sports clubs on SDGs indicators from a holistic perspective, through the incorporation  of a comprehensive multilevel curriculum that reaches managing and training staff, and ultimately  children and youth.

SportEYE has been designed under the horizontal priority “Environment and fight against climate change” of the Erasmus+ Programme, with a special focus in “Promoting education in and through sport” as it aims at supporting skills development in sport and environmental sustainability. More specifically, the project will be focusing on SDGs 4 (quality education), 11 (sustainable cities and communities), 12 (responsible consumption and production), 13 (climate action), 14 (life below water), 15 (life on land), 16 (peace and justice strong institutions) and 17 (partnership to achieve the goal).

While embracing the whole international dimension of environmental sustainability, SportEYE addresses special attention to the Mediterranean Region, with a view of promoting the role of sport as a way to raise awareness regarding the alarming increase in the impact of the climate crisis in the Mediterranean Basin. The main objectives of SportEYE are:

  • Research on the state-of-art and collect good practices on the existing policies, rules, strategies, experiences and initiatives which promote the knowledge, assumption and adoption of the SDGs by sport organizations in their daily work.
  • Develop and implement an innovative educational package on specific strategies and practical measures for improving the social and environmental impact of team sport clubs on their local communities.
  • Deliver training action plans to test the educational package on the field, track the progress and evaluate the social and environmental impact in the local communities. The training will be delivered to the following target audiences:
    • Sport organisations and team sport clubs, at grassroot and professional level
    • Children and youth engaged as players in team sport clubs
    • Sport governing bodies at regional, national and European level
    • Public authorities & Educational institutions
  • Design and develop an online collaborative platform aiming to contribute to the networking, exchange of ideas, experience and knowledge of the SDGs among people, organisations and experts committed to the topic at international level.
  • Analyse existing normative and practical conditions and formulate policy recommendations to promote the effective adoption of the SDGs for achieving positive social and environmental impacts on local communities at the international, regional and national levels.

Inspired and coordinated by the International Olympic Truce Centre (IOTC), SportEYE is jointly implemented with the International Centre for Sport Security Europe (ICSS Europe), Futbol Mas Spain, PLAY International, the “Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore” (UCSC), “Fundación Real Betis Balompié” and the European Football for Development Network (EFDN).

The project officially started its activities on 8 March 2023, in Lisbon, Portugal.
