International Woman’s Day

8 March 2021

On the occassion of the 2021 International Women’s Day, we are very proud for all the powerful refugee women, participating in Hestia FC, our sport for protection programme.

Hestia FC is the first refugee and migrant women football team in the Balkans, founded by IOTC in March 2019. The overall aim of the programme is the protection, empowerment, social integration and psychological well-being of women with less opportunities, as well as the promotion of the Olympic values and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through sport.

Message from the Hestia FC Manager, Katerina Salta: “The past year was a challenging one for everyone. Regarding women, for one more reason: since the outbreak of COVID-19, emerging data and reports have shown that all types of violence against women and girls, particularly domestic violence, has intensified. At the same time, the pandemic restrictions have kept us away from the pitch for months. But we continue our activities virtually and we keep on supporting our players. On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, we remember wonderful moments from the collaboration of the International Olympic Truce Centre with Equal Playing Field and we are sending a strong message, a strong reminder that Gender Equality must be at the heart of the post-pandemic recovery.”
